A flexibly-named band has appeared with Jonathan Coulton for live shows on certain occasions, during which he plays electric guitar. The band consists of drummer Marty Beller (of They Might Be Giants) and bassist Chris Anderson (not of Wired Magazine).

The band first appeared as Jonathan's supporting act during the 2010 Northampton and Somerville shows, in which Jonathan debuted a few new songs and played electric guitar for the first time on stage.

For Coulton's appearances on the They Might Be Giants' Join Us Tour, he was accompanied by Adam Bernstein on bass guitar and Christian Cassan on drums.

Shows for which the band has accompanied Coulton include:

Name[edit]

The band's name has yet to be officially determined, probably because no one asked Paul or Storm. In Portland, JoCo announced the tentative name of The New Groove Emergency. At subsequent Vancouver and Seattle shows, JoCo continued to use variations of New Groove Emergency, including both the New Groove Experience and NGE.

Johnathan Coulton and the Supernova Explosion, yet another potential name, birthed by Chris Hardwick.
