Banter?[edit]

One thing I wanted to discuss is whether or not we wanted to include between song banter moments in the setlists. It's potentially fun information and makes each show a little more unique, but it's also hard to quantify and not really any information that will ever lead to anything. Some of the shows that have occurred since we started the Wiki have included banter in the setlists ... what's the general opinion? I'd probably vote against. --MitchO 15:51, 7 April 2008 (EDT)

My vote is against banter within setlists, but banter videos in the "extra videos" section, like kerrin's twinkie vid. --Agent Lex (talk - contribs) 15:55, 7 April 2008 (EDT)

Concur with Lex, and add that banter videos for every single song probably don't need to be linked -- if something particularly extraordinary happens, that probably deserves an "extra videos" link, but other than that, I'd say link the entire set of banter videos, rather than include twenty different links. --Bry 18:09, 7 April 2008 (EDT)

Intermission[edit]

Trivial to be sure, but we should include an official way to indicate an intermission. My first thought would be

  1. Baby Got Back
  2. Shop Vac

(Intermission)

  1. The Future Soon
  2. Flickr

Do we want "Set list 1" and "Set list 2" above each section? Seems extraneous, and if my grand dream of using the term "Set list" as a way to count songs played comes true, the two titles could screw with that. --MitchO 16:09, 9 April 2008 (EDT)

EDIT: Now that I think about it, "Encore(s)" needs an official format too.

Shows without setlists[edit]

For setlists that are unavailable, I've been creating an alphabetical song list based on videos from the show (see the Minneapolis show). Thoughts on this? - Justinrussell 00:52, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

I like what you're doing, Justin -- obviously it's not, y'know, "optimal" (which would be the setlist), but I think it's the next best thing to it. Maybe we should make it really, really clear on the show page that the list of songs is not an ordered setlist (and also ask attendees to submit a setlist). So long as that gets communicated, I think alphabetical ordering makes a lot of sense. --Bry 01:26, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

Multiple videos[edit]

Elaborating on Justin's point from JoCopedia talk:Editing guidelines/Songs, in which he asked what should be policy for songs with multiple videos.

I mentioned that as time goes on, a song video page will get uglier and uglier as more and more gigs occur and more and more gig videos get linked. The same problem may arise for shows where multiple people are taping -- obviously, there's a finiteness to the length of a setlist, but the ugliness is still a problem. We could very easily end up with the entire show list looking like this:

Comprehensiveness demands that we include all the video recordings, but comprehensibility demands that we limit it in some manner, I think. The example I just gave would look better in a table, yes, but it still wouldn't be easy to use -- you still wouldn't know which links are worth following.

As long as there are only about two links per song, I think we can manage without a table (tables are, after all, a little bit of a hassle to set up in MediaWiki). If there's one song (such as First of May on May 1, 2008, in Minneapolis) that got recorded a bunch of times, it seems to look okay anyway. But I don't know what policy should be in the general case, or in the case of an entire show being recorded by multiple people.

I don't have a realistic solution at this point, but I can imagine a radical retooling of video links in general. I don't know if it's at all plausible, but I'm planning on writing up my thoughts at User:Bry/Videos - the nuclear option. If that link is not red, go check it out.

Parsing setlist videos[edit]

Apropos of nothing, as I said at JoCopedia talk:Editing guidelines/Songs, I still would like some way to have a bot parse setlist videos and file them automatically on the respective song's videos page. --Bry 02:01, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

Stuff that has been posted on shows[edit]

So while we figure out a standard format for shows, I thought it would be helpful to create a somewhat comprehensive list of what's been posted to show pages so far. Feel free to edit at will. - Justinrussell 22:42, 4 May 2008 (EDT)
