WikiProject talk:Song Of The Day

I was to some extent responsible for the suggestion, by which I mean I stream-of-consciousnessed it into an unrelated discussion and Mitch ran with it brilliantly. So I'm in favor.

My suggestions:

  • Let's set up a namespace or something for SotD, rather than overload the Template namespace again as we did for This Day in JoCo. (By "Let's," I mean, "Lex, will you?")
  • We could try and set up the calendar so that seasonal songs will be featured on appropriate days -- not only on those days, so First of May might turn up in November, but it definitely has to turn up on May 1; the various Christmas songs (Podsafe Christmas Song, Christmas Is Interesting, Chiron Beta Prime) could be featured in December, etc.

Knowing me, more suggestions will be trickling in for a while. --Bry 14:50, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the input and compliment, Bry. I agree that songs should show up on relevant days; it's the reason I went back and did May 3rd while the Tom Cruise/JoCo convergence was on my brain. And yes, since there aren't 365 songs, we have to have repeats on days that aren't just the obvious ones. Is Lex the only one who can set up a namespace? I'd love to figure out how to do more and more things in here. In case you couldn't tell, JoCopedia is obviously my pet hobby right now :D --MitchO 15:10, 5 May 2008 (EDT)
I'm afraid I am the only one who can set up a namespace, since it requires me to edit a file on the server. Understandably, I'd rather not give the FTP details out to anyone :D
Anyway, both This Day and Song o' the Day namespaces are set up. TDiJC: and SotD: respectively. --Lex (talk - contribs) 18:49, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

I'm still working on This Day in JoCo. Some of those will generate useful tidbits, though The Presidents generates far more dates than any other song. When any other song produces a tidbit, we have a natural candidate for Song of the Day, do we not? Thing a Week release dates are potentially useful tidbits, often associated with songs that don't have other dates associated with them, and distributed broadly (if thinly) over the calendar. "Date first performed live" would be useful, but we don't have reliable such dates for most songs, since we don't have a complete set of playlists. We can arbitrarily fill in the gaps with songs that don't really have strong date associations.-mtgordon 15:26, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

Well, I think there needs to be a different in the KIND of information, otherwise we have the potential for a lot of bleed, making one project or the other unnecessary. Other than the Template:SOTD May 1 fact I just put in, I'd rather Did You Know? be a little more, I dunno ... esoteric? The other two tidbits I put in would never show up in This Day ... --MitchO 15:36, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

So I created {{SotD:Main}} today, and cut and paste my way to 365 links. My initial thought was to put an ifexist in there, and just change the text to "click here to add SotD", but maybe we just say if it doesn't exist, let the user put the suggestion there on the main page, and have someone (I guess I volunteer) keep SotD:Main on their watch list and approve any added songs, to be added to the day's template? It's not like it's a hard job, and it does have a cap of one each day. I'm hoping to knock out at least a month's worht of them myself before SotD goes live, anyway. Can anyone come up with an elegant way to make the ifexist go to the SotD template of choice, maybe keep that link blue instead of red and put in the "Today's song is" and "Did You Know" portions automatically? Or is that too much effort and possibly too much freedom? --MitchO 11:41, 7 May 2008 (EDT)

I think this might do it. (Temporarily move the current day's SotD template if you want to see it work.)

Song of the Day!

There is no song of the day for today. Add one!.

Remove the "Add One" option?

I don't know if any other mods are regularly reading or not, but I wanted to get a few opinions on this ... since I haven't caught up with SotD, several anonymous users have added suggestions ... and quite frankly, none of them that great. Several people have put none JoCo songs, we've had uninteresting adds and a few repeats again. It's been a little frustrating, truth be told. Am I being elitist by suggesting we take the ability down? --MitchO 19:11, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
