Getting the Template ball rolling

  • Create a new template to be inserted into new user talk pages.
  • Create comprehensive editing guidelines, including both basic wiki syntax and JoCopedia policies.
  • Come up with an effective way to spread the message of informality, while reinforcing accuracy.

Firstly, what namespace are we using for templates? Template:Welcome?

Wording

Heres a basic skeleton to start with:

Welcome!

Hi Welcoming committee, and welcome to JoCopedia! Thanks heaps for your contributions thus far! We really hope you like the place and decide to stay!

If you're new to wikis you might find the following "new-user" links helpful. Even if you are familiar with other wikis, each one is different so please have a brief look at some point.

Once you are done there, or if you are a seasoned wiki editor then jump straight into these:

  • WikiProjects - What we are currently focusing on around the site.
  • The "To Do" Lists - Two lists of jobs around the site that need doing, one of quick jobs and one of larger tasks.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being an contributor! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) or use the "sign" button (Button sig.png) above the edit box. This will automatically produce your name and the date.

If you need help, really do feel free to ask me on my talk page, (that's what it's there for!) ask at the main page discussion, or ask an administrator on their talk page, we promise they don't bite...much! ;)

Again, welcome!

Dedicated welcomers could make a template in their own space and personalise it. ~ Percephene ~ talk contribs 12:30, 24 April 2008

Not bad, Percephene. I'd like to make it a little less stuffy overall, get people into a level of comfort here. Not necessarily Uncyclopedia level, but well written snark is always welcome. You know ... not the stuff I do. :D --MitchO 20:46, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
Yeah for sure, I just stuck that in for structure. Feel free to edit it or make changes! I'm at work at the mo so can't get too creative right now but I will look at the wording and "nice" it up a bit later! ;) ~ Percephene ~ talk contribs 01:12, 24 April 2008
Changed it a bit to make it feel more personal. Thoughts? Also I'll try and track down the javascript we used at Uncyc to make new users stand out on the Recent Changes page (any with no talk page were highlighted in bold and bright green for easy welcoming!) ~ Percephene ~ talk contribs 03:31, 27 April 2008
Tweaked it further. ~ Percephene ~ talk contribs 01:21, 28 April 2008

Updates

Well I went ahead and created Template:Welcome with the wording above. Its not without flaws but we can work on them as we go, I think its more important to have something. I've started using this on new users so we'll see what the reaction is.

Remember to use {{subst:Template:Welcome}} as it doesn't paste all the code into their page but rather just displays what is on the template, which is better, I forget how but I've been assured it is. :) ~ Percephene ~ talk contribs 11:08, 28 April 2008
