I want to be a rock star

When I was born I was just a young boy
Now I'm grown, I am a old boy
I live in this town, I love it (loves to live in this crazy, crazy town)
And there's nothing you can do to change it (nothing you can do to change it, nothing you can do to change it)

I'm a rock and roll boy (he is a rock and roll boy)
I love those rock and roll toys (he loves his rock and roll toys)
I'm a rock and roll boy (he is a rock and roll boy)
I love those rock and roll toys (he loves his rock and roll toys)

I come from a rock and roll town
And I know a kid named Mike Brown
If he ever comes to my town (if he ever comes to this crazy town)
I'm a gonna knock him down (I'm gonna knock him down, I'ma gonna knock him down)

I'm a rock and roll boy (he is a rock and roll boy)
I love those rock and roll toys (he loves his rock and roll toys)
I'm a rock and roll boy (he is a rock and roll boy)
I love those rock and roll toys (he loves his rock and roll toys)
<lyrics>
Some dumb Indian sold Manhattan for
Seven bucks and a bottle of booze
Went out drinking and came home sober and
Told his friends the good news

Bernadette saw the Virgin Mary but
No one else could and everyone tried
All her friends said that she'd gone crazy, she
Joined a convent and died

I'm the Indian, I am Bernadette
I'm the sucker who doesn't know it yet
I just signed it, I never reviewed
All the fine print you wrote out
Now I guess I'm screwed

Indiana Jones liked to travel, he
Took his friend on a treasure hunt trip
Did a favor, threw him the idol but
Never got back his whip

Boba Fett was a bounty hunter, he
Did his job well, he brought back his man
He was clutching his unspent money when he
Fell down a hole in the sand

I am Dr. Jones, I am Boba Fett
I'm the sucker who doesn't know it yet
I just signed it, I never reviewed
All the fine print you wrote out
Now I guess I'm screwed

It's bad news for me again
It never ends
I got no prize inside my Happy Meal
I got lots of money
I got lots of friends
Just like Meatloaf got a record deal

Alexander Graham Bell made telephones
His friend Watson was out all the time
Called him up just to chat, nobody home
Never got back his dime

Once upon a time France was beautiful
Had a queen who gave everyone cake
Then the people got mad and killed her dead
Took back all they could take

I am Graham Bell, Marie Antoinette
I'm the sucker who doesn't know it yet
I just signed it, I never reviewed
All the fine print you wrote out
Now I guess I'm screwed
"Code Monkey" is a song on Jonathan Coulton's sixth album, Thing a Week Three. It is one of Jonathan's most recognizable and best known songs, a concert staple and an identifier of his place in the geek rock genre.

History
"Code Monkey" was released as the twenty-ninth Thing a Week on April 14th, 2006. Jonathan claims in the blog entry for "Code Monkey" that the song isn't autobiographical, though he did use the term "code monkey" to refer to himself and his co-workers.

Shortly after its release, "Code Monkey" was linked to on Slashdot.org; the resultant traffic overload caused jonathancoulton.com to go down for over twenty-four hours.
Contestants were able to download the source files for the song and remix them as they saw fit. Four of the five winning entries can be found here. Jonathan has also created two "PG" versions of "Code Monkey", where the "cuss words" ("goddamn" and "crap") have been blanked out (blog entry here) and one with the "bad words reversed" (blog entry here).
"Code Monkey" is one of Jonathan's most regularly played songs; it is believed that Jonathan has performed it in every concert since its release. In live performances, the song is typically slowed down tremendously from the Thing a Week release, becoming more of a ballad. When performing with Paul and Storm, they usually accompany Jonathan with backing vocals. In addition, the song has been played in multiple variations; while accompanied by Kristen Shirts on ukelele, with Emily doing the Code Monkey Dance, or Jonathan himself using a Tenori-on.
"I Crush Everything" is the third track on Jonathan Coulton's second album, Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow. The song is about a giant squid that wants to be with a woman on the surface, but cannot because he would kill her if he tried. The song is listed as a "sad song" on the Listening Suggestions page.

History
"I Crush Everything" was originally written as part of John Hodgman's Little Gray Books Lecture #25, "The Animals: Are They Our Enemies." This lecture took place on March 3, 2004.

Live performance
"I Crush Everything" is performed somewhat regularly at Jonathan Coulton concerts. Usually prefaced with a short explanation, "This song is about a self-loathing giant squid", the live version is essentially the same as the version on "Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow".

Trivia
* Jonathan has said that when he was writing this song, he hadn't initially settled on it being about a giant squid, but more of just a generic sea monster.

:This article is about Jonathan Coulton's administrative assistant. For the fictional minion Scarface, see Skullcrusher Mountain.

Scarface is the pseudonym of an assistant employed by Jonathan Coulton. Scarface's duties include replying to e-mail sent to Coulton, particularly fan mail and working the merchandise table for local shows. Coulton has not disclosed whether Scarface has other responsibilities, though some additional details of the job description can be gleaned from the original Scarface's departing blog post (see below).

On April 21, 2008, Coulton officially announced that he had hired Scarface. In the days before this announcement, a number of people had already reported receiving replies signed "Scarface".

Scarface made her first public appearance at the June 21st, 2008 New York City show.

The pseudonym "Scarface" comes from the name of the narrator's assistant in Coulton's song Skullcrusher Mountain. Neither of these Scarfaces appears to have any connection to the many real and fictional people given that nickname, including the title character of the 1983 Al Pacino film.

On September 2, 2009, Coulton revealed that the original Scarface, named Meaghan, was leaving his employ to pursue her work at Tumblr full-time. Meaghan wrote that a friend of hers had become the new Scarface. Meaghan's About page on Tumblr shows that her full name is Meaghan O'Connell.
In April 2011, Scarface underwent its first gender reassignment, with the appointment of Drew Westphal to the position. Unlike previous Scarfaces, he doesn't work anonymously; his emails are signed "Scarface Drew Westphal, Henchman." "Re: Your Brains" is a song on Jonathan Coulton's fifth album, Thing a Week Two. It is one of Jonathan's most recognizable and best known songs, a concert staple and an identifier of his place in the geek rock genre.

History
"Re: Your Brains" was released as the twenty sixth Thing a Week on March 24th, 2006. It quickly became one of Jonathan's most recognizable songs, becoming the first song to receive a WoW video by Spiff.

Other versions
* There is also a French version of "Re: Your Brains", available on The Aftermath, called "Re Vos Cerveaux".
* 100 robots have played a rock/jungle version of "Re: Your Brains" at BarCamp Brighton 4 and The Dance of the Dead Zombie Prom in London
* During Desert Bus for Hope 2009, Jonathan Coulton was interviewed over the phone. Later that night, someone paid for Graham to sing Re: Your Brains in a Billy Mays voice. This was later put to the karaoke version of the song, and was dubbed 'Re: Billy May's Brains.' The MP3 can be found here.

Live performance
"Re: Your Brains" is one of Jonathan's most regularly played songs; it is believed that Jonathan has performed it in nearly every concert since its release. In live performances, the song is almost always played as the closing song of the main portion of the show. It is always introduced as needing audience participation, at which point Jonathan explains to the audience that he needs them to perform the zombie portion of the chorus. First-time JoCo fans and unfamiliar audiences will usually sing the test chorus with proper tone, rhythm, and diction, after which Jonathan will correct them, instructing them to instead sound properly like singing undead: tone-deaf, arrhythmic, and unintelligible.

Trivia
* There was a large controversy between JoCo fans over whether a colon appears in the title of the song or not. This was caused by the absence of a colon both in the JoCo store and on the Thing a Week 2 CD case. However, upon consulting with JoCo it has been established that the title is supposed to contain a colon.
* Spiff's WoW video for "Re: Your Brains" has been viewed over 3,000,000 times and is often credited by fans as their introduction to Jonathan Coulton.
* In Spiff's video, the woman trapped in the house does the Macarena during the guitar solo.
* In the webcomic ErfWorld, Book 1 Page 14 features the main character, Parson, listening to "Re: Your Brains" in his car on his way to work.
* The song is one of several available on a working jukebox in "The Parish", "Swamp Fever" and "The Passing" campaigns of Left 4 Dead 2. If the survivors stay by the jukebox, an infected horde will appear when the first chorus starts. Also available, although rare, is Still Alive.
* The song is used as the opening theme for a short audio drama by Mur Lafferty, titled The Takover, described as The Office meets Shaun of the Dead. Jonathan makes a cameo appearance in the last episode.
* Dragon*ConTV produced a live action video for the song which premiered at Dragon*Con 2007. The video is available on YouTube
"Washy Ad Jeffy" is a song on Jonathan Coulton's collection of unreleased tracks, The Aftermath.

History
"Washy Ad Jeffy" was a mnemonic device taught to Jonathan by his father to remember all the presidents and the terms that they served. At the time Jonathan first learned it, it only went up to Eisenhower, so Jonathan continued to add to it as more presidents were elected.

Live Performance
"Washy Ad Jeffy" is believed to have never been played at a Jonathan Coulton concert. However, he did play it in front of a live audience at the recording of 'The… Too Many Editions… Edition' of NPR's Ask Me Another, adding an 'O' to the end for Barack Obama.

Trivia
* Though performed during The Aftermath, "Washy Ad Jeffy" was not included in in a Bubble. Instead, he released a single YouTube video of him recording the song.
Trivia
* 43rd Thing a Week, released July 28, 2006.
* It is not obvious from the lyrics, but this song is told from the fictional perspective of Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock on "Star Trek" and hosted the "In Search of..." series of TV specials. According to JoCo's blog post about this song, it takes place after Nimoy, filming the "In Search of... Bigfoot" episode, actually found Bigfoot and the two "hooked up and had a crazy fling":

At first this was just a "Bigfoot broke my heart" song, but I wasn't getting a lot of traction. It wasn't until I realized that it was Leonard Nimoy talking that it came together for me. There are just a couple of subtle references to Spock in there, and Bigfoot's name is never mentioned, so if you haven't read this explanation you are either confused, or blissfully unaware that it's about Bigfoot and Leonard Nimoy.

* "I wish I really had no emotion" is a reference to Nimoy's role as Spock, a character known for not experiencing emotions.
* "In Search of..." is name-checked in the chorus; the third verse refers to another episode of the show, "In Search of... Atlantis".

"You Ruined Everything" is a song on Jonathan Coulton's seventh album, Thing a Week Four. A love song to his daughter, this is possibly Jonathan's most personal song.

History
"You Ruined Everything" was released as the forty-sixth Thing a Week on August 18, 2006. Jonathan's blog commentary on this song seems worth quoting in full:

I was having a conversation with a friend who had recently become a parent, and she reminded me of something I had forgotten about since my daughter was born. She was describing this what-have-I-done feeling - I just got everything perfect in my life, and then I went and messed it all up by having a baby. I don't feel that way anymore, but the thought certainly crossed my mind a few times at the beginning. Eventually you just fall in love and forget about everything else, but it's not a very comfortable transition. I compare the process to becoming a vampire, your old self dies in a sad and painful way, but then you come out the other side with immortality, super strength and a taste for human blood. At least that's how it was for me. At any rate, it's complicated.

Live performance
"You Ruined Everything" is played somewhat regularly at Jonathan Coulton concerts. Always given a full introduction about being a parent, it is played very similarly to the recorded version.

Trivia
* "You Ruined Everything" is classified as a sweet song on the Listening Suggestions page.
* It should be noted that Thing a Week was kicked off when his daughter was born in 2005. Jonathan has said in interviews that he suddenly felt his own mortality when looking at the tiny person who was arriving to replace him in the world. He felt that it was way past time for him to make a stab at achieving his dreams, since if he failed to try, he'd be telling his daughter that dreams weren't worth trying for.
"I'm Your Moon" is a song on Jonathan Coulton's seventh album, Thing a Week Four.

History
"I'm Your Moon" was released as the forty-seventh Thing a Week on August 25th, 2006, after several people suggested Jonathan write about Pluto's new status as a dwarf planet (which has since been renamed "Plutoids").

Live performance
"I'm Your Moon" is played somewhat regularly at Jonathan Coulton concerts. Jonathan usually gives a full explanation of the song's origins and what it means before playing it, casually damning the scientists who changed Pluto's status. Because there is no major solo in the song, the live version is essentially an acoustic version of the original recording.

Trivia
* "I'm Your Moon" is classified as a sweet song on the Listening Suggestions page.
* The song is written from the view of Charon, Pluto's moon. Because Charon is almost half the size of Pluto, the two do not have a traditional orbit where the small body basically moves around the center of the large body. Rather, both Pluto and Charon revolve around a point between them, like a bola or a spinning pair of skaters. In addition, the two celestial objects are tidally face-locked, meaning they keep the same "face" towards each other ("like dancers", according to Jonathan's blog of the song).

History
"Re: Your Brains" was released as the twenty sixth Thing a Week on March 24th, 2006. It quickly became one of Jonathan's most recognizable songs, becoming the first song to receive a WoW video by Spiff.
Live performance
"Re: Your Brains" is one of Jonathan's most regularly played songs; it is believed that Jonathan has performed it in every concert since its release. In live performances, the song is almost always played as the closing song of the main portion of the show. It is always introduced as needing audience participation, at which point Jonathan explains to the audience that he needs them to perform the zombie portion of the chorus. First time JoCo fans and unfamiliar audiences will usually sing the test chorus with proper tone, rhythm, and diction, after which Jonathan will correct them, instructing them to instead sound properly like singing undead: tone-deaf, arrhythmic, and unintelligible.
"A Talk with George", a tribute to American journalist and author George Plimpton, is a song on Jonathan Coulton's fifth album, Thing a Week Two.

History
"A Talk with George" was released as the twenty-third Thing a Week on March 3rd, 2006. Jonathan wrote the song for a contest run by the Plimpton Project. The song won the prize of $400.00.

Live performance
"A Talk with George" is occasionally played at Jonathan Coulton concerts. Because of the track's lean arrangement, mostly Jonathan with a guitar, the live version sounds essentially the same.
"Re: Your Brains" is a song on Jonathan Coulton's fifth album, Thing a Week Two.

* There is also a French version of "Re: Your Brains", available on The Aftermath, called Re Vos Cerveaux.

Jonathan William Coulton (born December 1, 1970, in New Haven, CT), affectionately known as JoCo to his fans, is a musician best known for the geeky subject matter of many of his songs and the nontraditional licensing and distribution of his music. His most prominent accomplishments include his Thing a Week project and his songs "Code Monkey", "Still Alive", "Skullcrusher Mountain", and "The Future Soon". Jonathan is largely associated with the folk rock genre, though he occasionally experiments with other styles. Jonathan's primary instrument is the guitar, but he also plays a number of other instruments, including synthesizers, banjo, ukulele, and zendrum live and in-studio. He wears boxers, and his poop smells like mangoes.
Biography
Education years
Jonathan's father is a lawyer. Jonathan's affinity for music, though, was apparent from the beginning, since he played the snare drum in his high school marching band.

Jonathan's interest in music bloomed at Yale, where he studied music in pursuit of his Bachelor of Arts degree. There, he also joined a capella music groups the Spizzwinks(?) (the parenthetical question mark is part of the name) and the Whiffenpoofs. Also while at Yale, Jonathan met John Hodgman, a friend who became integral to his development as a performing musician.

Early career
After graduation, Jonathan and John Hodgman moved to Manhattan. Jonathan worked for some time in the Artists and Repertoire (scouting) department of an adult contemporary record label. Next, he worked for some time at the William Morris Talent and Literary Agency.

Jonathan then found a job as an espresso slinger at Cooper's Coffee, where he later began to perform music. When Cooper's closed, Jonathan moved on to a software company called Cluen. He was employed there for the next eight years, where he wrote computer software.

During this period of relative stability in Jonathan's life, he undertook a few projects. The first was an album called Smoking Monkey, and was released in 2003. A modest number of copies were sold. Jonathan notes:

I didn't sell very much stuff as far as I remember, maybe a couple CD's a month, but at this point it really wasn't so much about making a living. Mostly it was a nice ego boost to have an actual CD, and to see my name come up in the iTunes store.

Around that time, John Hodgman sought Jonathan's collaboration on the Little Gray Book lecture series, a project John described as a two-man-one-man-show. The lecture series was similar to the Hodgman's later book tour. Other than banter between John and Jonathan, John would deliver a monologue and Jonathan would play accompaniment or perform works composed for the show.

During one of the Little Gray Book lectures, Jonathan was approached by the curator of the Pop!Tech conference, Andrew Zolli. Andrew, upon hearing Jonathan perform "The Future Soon", invited Jonathan to come play "The Future Soon" at Pop!Tech. On October 17, 2003, Jonathan did perform at Pop!Tech. Attending Pop!Tech turned out to be a large factor in Jonathan's current career. Here, Jonathan was introduced to Creative Commons, the license under which Jonathan releases his music to this day. Also, Jonathan began discussions for the idea of becoming Contributing Troubadour for Popular Science magazine (which was employing John Hodgman).

During the course of Little Gray Books, Jonathan completed his album Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow. He released the album on October 1, 2004.

In February 2005, Jonathan was officially placed on the masthead of Popular Science magazine with the title of Contributing Troubadour. As contributing troubadour, Jonathan wrote and recorded the EP Our Bodies, Ourselves, Our Cybernetic Arms as a downloadable supplement for the issue of Popular Science entitled, "The Future of the Body."

Turning professional
On September 2, 2005, Jonathan quit his computer programming job at Cluen. This marked the beginning of Jonathan's professional music career.

Soon after resigning, Jonathan began creating his first albums as a professional musician. Based on an idea proposed by a co-worker, Jonathan started on the Thing a Week project. During the year-long project, Jonathan created and released one new song each week for a year. The project started September 16, 2005 and ended on September 29, 2006. The project yielded the four Thing a Week albums comprising the Thing a Week box set.

Jonathan started the Podcast on May 12, 2006, producing some of the earlier episodes concurrently with the later songs in Thing a Week. He hosted the podcast until Episode 37 on May 21, 2007.

In a May 2011 interview on NPR's program Planet Money, Coulton revealed that online sales from his website had topped one million dollars.
Artificial Heart is Jonathan Coulton's eighth studio album, produced by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants. The CD packaging and related merchandise were designed by graphic designer Sam Potts.

History
In 2010, Jonathan Coulton announced that his long hiatus from recording new material was ending. After Coulton opened for They Might Be Giants earlier that year, John Flansburgh suggested working together on Coulton's new material. The collaboration helped push Coulton outside his comfort zone, and he frequently commented on being excited and terrified by the process. As a result, Artificial Heart represents a significant departure from Coulton's earlier albums. Not only is it the first Coulton album to be produced by someone besides Coulton himself, it's the first to be recorded in an "actual studio" (owned by They Might Be Giants' long time producer, Patrick Dillett), and the first to be written for a full band. In addition to the drummer and bassist who frequently appear in Coulton's live shows, Artificial Heart features over a dozen guest musicians and several tracks with guest lead vocals.

Coulton and his collaborators recorded Artificial Heart between September 2010 and June 2011. The album was released in late August 2011, with an official release party on September 2.

Live versions of some tracks debuted as early as July 2010, so there are many concert recordings that predate the official release date. Fans on the JoCo Forums compiled some of the best bootlegs into a project called Artificial Artificial Heart while waiting for the studio version to be released.
"Chiron Beta Prime" is a song on Jonathan Coulton's fifth album, Thing a Week Two. It tells the story of Christmastime on a planet where all humans have been enslaved by uncaring and violent robots.

History
"Chiron Beta Prime" was originally written around Christmastime 2004 at the request of a friend of Jonathan's who wanted a "Christmas song with a futuristic theme" to send out on a CD as a holiday card. It was later released as the twenty-first Thing a Week on February 17th, 2006.

Live performance
"Chiron Beta Prime" is performed somewhat regularly at Jonathan Coulton concerts. If performing with Paul and Storm, they will usually join Jonathan by doing backup vocals for the chorus. Also, Jonathan occasionally selects a member of the audience (or sometimes a "guest star") to do the "MESSAGE REDACTED" line. In more recent shows, that person is also given the opportunity to vocalize the keyboard solo (made famous by fan Andy Bates) and join in on the third chorus.

Trivia
* The phrase "soylent green" in the song refers to a Charlton Heston movie of the same name where in the dark, dystopian future, an overcrowded population eats processed food wafers that are secretly made from dead people.
* The message is a coded cry for help because other cries for help get redacted. The Robots do not recognize the Soylent Green reference and let it slip through.
"Curl", an anthem for the ice based Olympic sport is a song on Jonathan Coulton's fifth album, Thing a Week Two.

History
"Curl" was released as the twentieth Thing a Week on February 10th, 2006.

Live appearance
"Curl" is played occasionally at Jonathan Coulton concerts, usually in colder cities (especially in Minnesota, and a required song for Canadian setlists) where it's more likely there are actually curlers in the audience. When performing with Paul and Storm, they usually accompany Jonathan with full backing vocals.

Trivia
* Curling has been an Olympic sport since the 1998 Winter Olympics. Because it was the first time many Americans were seeing the sport, it enjoyed a brief spurt in popularity.
"Dance, Soterios Johnson, Dance" is a song inspired by Soterios Johnson, the morning anchor on the NPR station in New York, WNYC, who may or may not have a secret life of dance. It appears on Jonathan Coulton's fifth album, Thing a Week Two.

History
"Dance, Soterios Johnson, Dance" was originally written for Little Gray Books Lecture #27: How to Lead a Double Life (or Death) (Download MP3). On his website at the time, JoCo wrote about it as follows:

"If you don't live in New York, chances are you don't know who Soterios Johnson is. But if you do, you have certainly heard him say his name over and over again on WNYC's Morning Edition. NPR is my alarm clock, so I'm pretty familiar with old SJ, and I got to thinking: this guy's so smooth, so polished, he's got to have some kind of a crazy secret life in which he goes to raves and lets it all hang out. (Also, I had to write a song about double lives for Little Gray Books.) The official title of this song is Dance, Soterios Johnson, Dance, and I'm going to be a real stickler about the punctuation here, so watch it."

In a November 2005 interview, Johnson said about the song, "I’m quite honored...It’s a clever and catchy song written by a very creative guy."

It received a full update and was released as the eighteenth Thing a Week on January 27, 2006.

JoCo, in a comment on his blog entry (January 27, 2006) described the circumstances of his rewrite as follows:

"Sheesh. This is worse than when Dylan went electric. The lyrics are different in this version - when we did a Little Gray Books show in Philadelphia I localized the song a bit by adding the whole Terry Gross thing (her show Fresh Air started at WHYY in Philly). I for one like these lyrics better. And it’s my damned internet!"

In an interview in June 2008, JoCo said the new lyrics were written at the last moment while sitting on the sidewalk outside the lecture hall, because a musical group scheduled to perform at the lecture couldn't come. The lecture, along with the first (acoustic) performance of the song with the new lyrics, can be heard on the PRX website.

Demo version
A demo version of "Dance, Soterios Johnson, Dance" on the non CD collection, Other Experiments. The lyrics are slightly different, and it has little to none of the electronic accompaniment of the Thing a Week version. The demo version of this song is part of the non-album collection Other Experiments and is available on the Jonathan Coulton Store as Dance, Soterios Johnson, Dance (Demo).

Live performance
"Dance, Soterios Johnson, Dance" is occasionally played at Jonathan Coulton concerts. It is a popular choice for requests. When performed, it is stripped down to just Jonathan and a guitar, sounding more like the original demo version.
