<lyrics>
Judea was part of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 200 BCE when King Antiochus III the Great of Syria defeated King Ptolemy V Epiphanes of Egypt at the Battle of Panium. Judea became at that moment part of the Seleucid Empire of Syria. King Antiochus III the Great, wanting to conciliate his new Jewish subjects guaranteed their right to "live according to their ancestral customs" and to continue to practice their religion in the Temple of Jerusalem. However in 175 BCE, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the son of Antiochus III invaded Judea, ostensibly at the request of the sons of Tobias. The Tobiads, who led the Hellenizing Jewish faction in Jerusalem, were expelled to Syria around 170 BCE when the high priest Onias and his pro-Egyptian faction wrested control from them. The exiled Tobiads lobbied Antiochus IV Epiphanes to recapture Jerusalem. As the ancient Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus, tells us "The king being thereto disposed beforehand, complied with them, and came upon the Jews with a great army, and took their city by force, and slew a great multitude of those that favored Ptolemy, and sent out his soldiers to plunder them without mercy. He also spoiled the temple, and put a stop to the constant practice of offering a daily sacrifice of expiation for three years and six months."

When the Second Temple in Jerusalem was looted and services stopped, Judaism was outlawed. In 167 BCE, Antiochus ordered an altar to Zeus erected in the Temple. He banned circumcision and ordered pigs to be sacrificed at the altar of the temple. Antiochus's actions provoked a large-scale revolt. Mattityahu, a Jewish priest, and his five sons Jochanan, Simeon, Eleazar, Jonathan, and Judah led a rebellion against Antiochus. Judah became known as Yehuda HaMakabi (which means "Judah the Hammer"). By 166 BCE, Mattathias had died, and Judah took his place as leader. By 165 BCE, the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy was successful. The Temple was liberated and new holy vessels were made. According to the Talmud, olive oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was required to burn throughout the night, every night. The story goes that there was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight-day festival was declared by the Jewish sages to commemorate this miracle.
Artificial Heart is Jonathan Coulton's eighth studio album, produced by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants. The CD packaging and related merchandise—including the Diagnostic Metrics series—were designed by graphic designer Sam Potts.

History
In 2010, Jonathan Coulton announced that his long hiatus from recording new material was ending. After he opened for They Might Be Giants earlier that year, John Flansburgh suggested working together on Coulton's new material. The collaboration helped push Coulton outside his comfort zone, and he frequently commented on being both excited and terrified by the process. As a result, Artificial Heart represents a significant departure from Coulton's earlier albums. Not only is it the first JoCo album to be produced by someone besides Coulton himself, it's the first to be recorded in an "actual studio" (owned by They Might Be Giants' long time producer, Patrick Dillett), and the first to be written and arranged for a full band. In addition to the drummer and bassist who frequently appear in Coulton's live shows, Artificial Heart features over a dozen guest musicians and several tracks with guests performing lead vocals.

Coulton and his collaborators recorded Artificial Heart between September 2010 and June 2011. The album was released in late August 2011, with an official release party on September 2.

Live versions of some tracks debuted as early as July 2010, so there are many concert recordings that predate the official release date. Fans on the JoCo Forums compiled some of the best bootlegs into a project called Artificial Artificial Heart while waiting for the studio version to be released.

Availability
Artificial Heart CDs were first made available to the public at PAX Prime 2011, but the official release party was September 2, 2011, at a show in Atlanta. Online pre-orders and digital downloads of the album are available from his website as of August 30, 2011, though it temporarily became unavailable at midnight PST on October 5, 2011.

In addition to the album itself, the pre-order page offers several merchandise packages featuring t-shirts, posters, USB keys and other extras. The ordering experience features graphics and copy text to match the album's theme.

A limited vinyl edition of the album was available for subscribers to the Level 4 Artificial Heart merchandise package. Signed copies of the LP were also sold at live shows. Though the artwork uses the same elements as the CD art, its design differs greatly. Consistent with the chromatic themes of the art surrounding Artificial Heart, the album is pressed on gold translucent wax.

The Diagnostic Metrics
The artwork for the content and promotional materials for Artificial Heart prominently features a collection of symbols called the Diagnostic Metrics designed by Sam Potts.

The interpretation of the graphics is not given, but it may be possible to infer their meaning from context. For possible interpretations of the meaning of the symbols, see the Interpretation of the Diagnostic Metrics page.

John Flansburgh is one half of the musical duo "They Might Be Giants", and the producer of Jonathan Coulton's 8th studio album, Artificial Heart.

In March of 2010, while Coulton was opening a few shows on TMBG's North American tour, Flansburgh offered to produce an album for Coulton. Coulton has described the collaboration as "thrilling", and credited the project with making him stretch and grow creatively. Many of the new songs have a different sound than Coulton's prior work, which some attribute to Flansburgh's influence.

Flansburgh also helped arrange Want You Gone, the song Coulton wrote for the game Portal 2.

They Might Be Giants is an alternative music group formed by John Linnell and John Flansburgh in 1982. Jonathan Coulton has cited the duo as being one of his biggest influences. The group eventually expanded to involve a backing band, including drummer Marty Beller who is now also part of Coulton's unnamed band.

In 2009, a Coulton show in Chicago was up against They Might Be Giants playing a different venue in the same city. Aware of the large crossover between fans of both acts — as well as being a huge TMBG fan himself — Coulton was inspired to perform a set of TMBG songs at his own show. Together with Paul and Storm he covered the entirety of their acclaimed "Flood" album in between Paul and Storm's set and his own. When They Might Be Giants later invited him as the opener on a few tour dates in March 2010, Coulton jokingly credited the cover show.

Coulton has since maintained close ties with the band. He eventually convinced them to start using Twitter, and is working with Flansburgh and drummer Marty Beller on his new musical ventures.
