* Coulton used to have a job at a coffee shop where he and a friend convinced their boss to let them play music for the patrons.  They did improv-type songs where someone would shout out a subject for a song.  Someone shouted "circus" and Coulton improved a couple of lines he liked, which eventually became "Bozo's Lament".

"Bozo's Lament" was originally written live, as an improvisational song when Jonathan performed in a coffee shop. A patron suggested the circus as a topic, and when Jonathan decided he liked a few of the improvised lines, he continued to work on the song for Smoking Monkey.[1]
