(Yes, but is it a theme?)
(mtgordon thinks cover songs should be a category rather than a theme.)

::Which is an excellent argument for the existence of a :Category:Cover songs, with which I agree completely. Cover songs should absolutely be grouped together, IMO. Does that mean that "Cover songs" is a theme, and specifically that it should be a subcategory of Themes? I'm not convinced. The other themes seem to be specific subject matter (Monkeys, Future, Cake...) or mood-evoking (Sweet songs, Sing A Longs), but "Cover songs" isn't really either. --Bry 14:37, 16 May 2008 (EDT)

I'm not even sure where to put this -- here, or in Category talk:Themes, or in WikiProject talk:Themes, or in Talk:Cover songs. Does it make sense for this to be a theme at all? Almost all of the other themes have something to do with the lyrical content of the song -- e.g. Break-ups has songs with lyrics about break-ups, Insanity has songs with lyrics about insanity. Sweet songs has songs that are sweet, although style-wise it doesn't fit the format of the others. The only other exception is Sing A Longs, and that still to some extent has to do with the content of the song. But there's not much thematic I see about a song being a cover; if there weren't a better place for it, I'd be all right with leaving Covers as a subcategory of Themes, but it already makes a lot of sense as a subcategory of Songs. --Bry 13:00, 16 May 2008 (EDT)

Well, I think "putting a JoCo stamp on other pieces" is thematic ... I think people do tend to hear a cover and think "I wonder what else he's covered" or "I wonder who else has done this song." I know I do. In particular, I think if the information is already there, people may see the list and go "Huh, Don't Talk to Strangers. Wonder what it sounds like." --MitchO 14:05, 16 May 2008 (EDT)
Which is an excellent argument for the existence of a Category:Cover songs, with which I agree completely.
It's worth noting that some songs are pretty straight covers (I Will), whereas other covers are frankly subversive (Baby Got Back, You Oughta Know). That undermines the theme argument somewhat, though it's clearly a valid category IMHO. -mtgordon 23:47, 16 May 2008 (EDT)
