"Furry Old Lobster", a tribute to the mythical original lobster in John Hodgman's book "Areas of My Expertise", is a song on Jonathan Coulton's fourth album, Thing a Week One.

History

"Furry Old Lobster" was originally written for the book tour of "Areas of My Expertise". In the book, Hodgman "claims" that the original lobster was actually a kind of sea otter. But at some point, someone brought hard-shelled lobsters (the only kind we actually know) to New York and let them roam free in Central Park, which freaked out the residents. So they rounded them all up and sent them to Maine, where they killed off all the original furry lobsters, so now the only lobster we see there is the hard-shelled variety.

During this time, Jonathan made several media appearances supporting John and the book, usually singing an acoustic version of "Furry Old Lobster". It was then updated, recorded and released "by request" as the twelfth Thing a Week on December 9th, 2005.

Live performance

"Furry Old Lobster" is occasionally performed at Jonathan Coulton concerts. It used to be more of a regular staple, having more exposure than previous Jonathan Coulton songs due to the media appearances. When performed live, "Furry Old Lobster" goes back to the original, acoustic version of the song. Jonathan also occasionally performs it at John Hodgman events.
