"I'm a Mason Now" is one of Jonathan Coulton's oldest available songs and appears on his first album, Smoking Monkey.

"I'm a Mason Now" is one of the six songs listed on the oldest archived version of Jonathan's website; the song was originally just called "Mason".

Live performance

"I'm a Mason Now" is believed to have never been performed at a Jonathan Coulton concert.

  • The verses and guitar bits (intro, interludes and solo) are in the unorthodox time signature of 7/4. The last line of each verse is extended by a beat to transition into the choruses, which, along with the bridge, are in 4/4 time.
  • "Mason" refers to Freemasonry, an ancient fraternal society, whose members use many secret rituals and symbols to conduct their meetings.
  • "Shriners", a related organization whose members wear the famous red fez, are also briefly mentioned in the song

"I'm a Mason Now" is available for purchase in the Jonathan Coulton MP3 Store as an individual track or as part of Smoking Monkey. Of course, this song is also included as part of the "Everything" playlist.

Downloadable FLAC versions of the above are available in the Jonathan Coulton FLAC Store
