Archive of User talk:MitchO from May-Jun 2008

(Thought I'd mention -- I think you accidentally added the Template:Welcome directly to User:Sompm instead of User talk:Sompm, and also I think we're using {{subst:Template:Welcome}} instead of just {{Template:Welcome}}, so that all the text of the template is pasted in. I'll go clear the page and add the welcome text to Sompm's talk page.) --Bry 22:16, 3 May 2008 (EDT)

I've rolled back your changes to Template:Welcome, since the contributions link works properly when you use {{subst:Template:Welcome}}... --Bry 17:22, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

I am working on the order of the Minneapolis show right now. I think I have all the songs there, but can't remember exact order. JoCo played a Journey cover as the last encore song, but I can't remember what it was right now. Thanks! I'm probably going to get this signature wrong... --Meagneato 20:13, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the banana, MitchO! And yes, the card works just fine :) — Wesley | 20:17, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

I've just said this in the forums, but I really, really dig SotD:Main. Nicely done! (This is the point at which you pretend I've actually taken the time to create a card and give it to you...) --Bry 17:12, 7 May 2008 (EDT)

Don't worry, I'm not that trigger happy with others' pages. Someday, some of those pages will graduate to QVFD; right now, it's just a list of pages that bug me. (Yours are gone from the list :) — Wesley | 17:54, 8 May 2008 (EDT)

Hey, thanks for filling in that info in John Hodgman. Good catch, and interesting fact. — Wesley | 02:07, 2 July 2008 (EDT)

videoz

I'm just going through each of the songs I have videos for and adding links to them on YouTube to that song's page. I hope that's OK.

Hey, Mitch -- thanks for deleting my paragraph about cats 'n' such. I think I left that on the sandbox the first week or so that Lex put it up, and expected at the time it would all be scrubbed before the Pedia went live. You've Mister Cleaned it!

themes

Unfortunately, you have to have the plain [[Category:whatever]] for it to go in the category, and to list it you have to have the separate [[:Category:whatever|whatever]]. That's just the way MediaWiki works, I'm afraid. --Lex (talk - contribs) 12:06, 27 April 2008 (EDT)

Whatchu talkin' 'bout MitchO?

Does too! See Exhibit A :P ~ Percephene ~ talk contribs 12:15, 06 May 2008

Interwiki

Goddammit, it's more broken than I thought. Thanks a lot, MediaWiki! At least it works for blog posts... right? --Lex (talk - contribs) 17:13, 6 May 2008 (EDT)

SotD, TDiJC

Quick, random notes:

  • Have you seen the #ifexist -> preloaded template fix I put up at WikiProject talk:Song Of The Day#SOTD:Main? It seems to work properly, and since the box itself's copied and pasted from your User:MitchO/Main Page, it should be usable there.
  • Speaking of SotD, what about occasional "theme weeks"? May be difficult if we're using the same songs on the same days every year, since they won't always fall on the same week. Worth consideration?
  • I might also arrange the songs on the SotD talk:Main in something like this:
Song Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4
I'm Having a Party
Bozo's Lament May 18
Kenesaw Mountain Landis
Ikea
I Hate California
Christmas Is Interesting
Over There
Millionaire Girlfriend
First of May May 1
De-Evolving
I'm a Mason Now May 16
Overhead
  • I think TDiJC may need an overall revamping -- split it into months, which would lessen your concerns about templates taking too long to load (which may not be so much of a problem anyway)? (I mean, split it by months and embed the templates in the months.) Think that's about it for this batch of comments... --Bry 13:18, 8 May 2008 (EDT)
Well, I think I need to get a lot further in the SotD project to worry about establishing a table, though that ultimately seems like the right idea. I just look at the list and start hunting for inspiration right now. The ifexist part looks good, but for some god awful reason my personal main page thinks it's May 8th, when the actual Main Page thinks it's May 7th. I'll fiddle when I get a chance . --MitchO 13:34, 8 May 2008 (EDT)
(checks watch) It is May 8th, isn't it? Which page thinks it's the 7th? --Bry 13:36, 8 May 2008 (EDT)
Bizarre. Your example was still showing May 7th earlier, but it's fixed now. Either you stealth edited, or I'm stuck in a time loop. :p --MitchO 13:40, 8 May 2008 (EDT)
Well, I did null-edit (to refresh the page) -- wikipages don't always reload the template (and usually not immediately -- try, for example, changing the Template:RFC to take out the auto-include-in-category, then refreshing Category:RFC and seeing some pages disappear and others stay). But my example was previously showing Bozo's Lament, which was May 8 before you moved it to the 18th, I think. --Bry 13:45, 8 May 2008 (EDT)
Apropos of nothing, it strikes me suddenly that we missed a golden opportunity when we didn't name this project "Thing a Day." ;) --Bry 18:38, 9 May 2008 (EDT)

A quick note

Thanks

Thanks for helping me out! The encouragement from the little things like the welcome when I joined and the banana card really make a big difference, and I wanted to take a moment to share my appreciation. Keep up the great work!

Wesley
Thanks, buddy!
Hey, Mitch, thanks for all your hard work on the wiki! The song pages you've been fixing really look good; not only that, but you've put a lot of really interesting and informative content in, too. Just to let you know it hasn't gone unnoticed, nor unappreciated. --Bry 22:12, 22 May 2008 (EDT)
Burying this in here intentionally. Will you send me an e-mail? vaguelyamusing at gmail dot com. Great meeting you Saturday. --Bry 22:21, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

Re: Kenesaw

No, I hear ya -- sorry about the edit conflicts! I've been using "Coulton" rather than "Jonathan" everywhere, which is a lot of places; I'll start using "Jonathan," then, but I don't know what to do about all the pages where I used "Coulton". ("WikiProject:Pages Bry Screwed Up"?) As I've been mentioning, I'd really like to put together some kind of style guide, just so we all know whether we should use ==Setlist== or '''Set List''' or whatever... --Bry 11:55, 20 May 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the welcome!

I wasn't sure where to find the guides, so your message definitely helped! Now I get to try out this signature thing! --Encubed 10:41, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

Forum post link

Just thought I would quickly fill you in on where my thought process went on fixing the link on Kristen Shirts' page. Firstly I noticed you made a slight mistake in URL, it is comment.php?DiscussionID not forward slash. This didn't fix the prblem, it just meant instead of getting a forum error page I was getting a jonathancoulton.com error page. In the end I figured out what the problem is. In mediawiki (I assume it is universal) all page URLs after the final forward slash use punctuation in the code form (eg a spce is an underscore, a comma is "%2C", etc). This mean that it put the URL for the forum in that form. So it was returning an error as it needs the question mark, the and sign, the equals all to be in punctuation for it to recognise the page and take you to the right place. This means that you can not use an internal link to link to the forums. Internal links can only be used for wiki pages and pages with plain text URLs (eg songdetails pages). Just thought I would let you know for future reference.
Summary: You can't use internal links to link to the forum. --BenS 11:41, 22 June 2008 (EDT)
